Microsoft to Buy GitHub for 7.5 Billion Dollars

June 4, 2018 | Redmond, Washington

Microsoft, the technology giant, seems to be on the buying spree and this time it's rather a giant open sourced 'source control' platform GitHub.com. “Microsoft is a developer-first company, and by joining forces with GitHub we strengthen our commitment to developer freedom, openness and innovation,” said Satya Nadella, CEO, Microsoft.

Microsoft would be paying in stocks for the acquisition and it's expected to be closed soon after legal reviews & closing formalities. GitHub.com is biggest platform where tons of open source libraries & projects are available. A lot of software innovators choose GitHub.com to store their source code/content. Microsoft itself is the biggest publisher on GitHub.com with ~1000 developers publishing the libraries daily. Microsoft recently killed their GitHub competitor named CodePlex and this paves perfect ground for acquisition. This will also give boost to Git in larger corporations given Microsoft backing & owning it. You can read more here.
